How Jo- Rae- De Boer Goats got started By Rae Manning
My family has been raising cattle for some time now. My grandmaw always complained about the hill behind her house waws coved in trees and brush (good home for black snakes). The cows would never eat from behind her house. So what animal can eat “EVERYTHING”? Of course we bought our first goats. I still remember that hot summer day whenever I was going to 4th grade. Poppy pulled out the old mama scrub goat and her two kids jumped out from behind her. Debbie took the mama for herself, and named it Diputs, stupid spelled backwards, lol. My cousin had to have the little kid doe named Zola. So I got stuck with the little black head buck named Ray, after me! That’s the story of our first goats, but what got us into the boer goats? It began with a simple question…
“Auntie, can I show a goat?”
After that we began our research, finding everything we could on boer goats. Our first boer buck was CSF Watauga from Chestnut Springs Farm. One night while I was looking in a Goat Rancher, I discovered a black boer goat! I thought “How is that even possible?” After a few calls and e-mails we found ourselves packing to go to Iowa Park, TX to Little League Ranch (now called The League Ranch). I had the opportunity to interview Mr. Troy Powell. He said that black was the new style. We purchased Texas, Dorothy and Miss Mary. Our business has grown ever since. We still have old mama Diputs and Zola. We had to sell Ray. I am continuing to show my 4-H show wethers. My goal is to breed the West Virginia Grand Champion show wether. We are breeding for color and excellence. I like to talk about boer goats and I check the e-mail often, so e-mail me about any goat(s) you are interested in or just to talk about goats. So there it is, the story of the beginning of Jo-Rae- De Boer Goats |
